When Henry Fillmore composed the title march, Americans We, he placed a caption at the top of the score: “for all of us.” This concert salutes Americans of all backgrounds, and in the course of its unfolding provides an historical overview of great American band music, from exciting marches, to virtuosic cornet solos, to majestic concert selections.
World famous trumpeter Vincent DiMartino, who is completing a new solo compact disc with the band on this weekend, will present two solos by our guest composer, Kentucky’s own James Curnow: Concertpiece, and Be Thou My Vision. DiMartino will also feature on old-time classics, like the demanding Variations on My Old Kentucky Home, and John Philip Sousa’s The Queen of Love. Curnow will also guest conduct the band on a new fanfare-like work Hallelujah!–sure to be a crowd pleaser.
As the band prepares to perform at the upcoming Band History Conference of the Great American Brass Band Festival, where the topic of the day is Abraham Lincoln and American Band Music, the band will feature on this concert several notable works dealing with that subject: American Civil War Fantasy (Bilik) and Reunion and Finale from the film Gettysburg (Edelman).
The program rounds out with some great American marches as specially arranged by band members: March Electric (Creatore/Michael West); On Guard (Goldman/David Henderson).
