The Lexington Brass Band launches their 2008-09 concert season with MAIN STREET BRASS, Sunday afternoon, November 2, at 4:00 PM, Calvary Baptist Church, 150 East High Street, Lexington. This outstanding program focuses on American music, including a moving tribute to President John F. Kennedy on the 45th anniversary of his assassination. Tickets are $5.00, General admission. Renowned Kentucky composer James Curnow composed In Memoriam J.F.K. to commemorate the loss of the distinguished leader. Narrated by Nicky Hughes, speaking words by Kennedy himself, the majestic work will prove an emotional highlight.
During the concert the band will offer a Brass Band Primer, with brief demonstrations of the various instruments in the British-style brass band. Two spectacular works then further showcase the timbres of the band: Eric Ball’s Main Street: Variations for Brass Band, and Ray Farr’s Intrada: Ein’ Feste Burg. In the latter, the band will divide into multiple choirs and literally surround the audience with sound.
More Americana rounds out the program, including an excerpt from Dvorak’s New World Symphony and a scintillating march by E.F. Goldman. The concert comes to a rousing conclusion with a blazing new rendition of God Bless the U.S.A.
The Lexington Brass Band’s concerts–one of the best bargains in the area at $5 a ticket–last one hour and are jammed packed with excellent music and informative commentary.
