The brass band has chosen seasonal music with an ‘early music’ flavor or origin, but arranged in 21st century styles. Our guest ensemble will be “Musick’s Company” from Lexington’s Center for Old Music. Their program offering will feature instrumental music from the Middle Ages, including 13th/14th century dance tunes, processional music for the Medieval days of festival, and 15th century English carols. In addition, vocal soloist Jennifer Brock will perform with the consort. The period instruments used for this performance will include Medieval fiddle and harp, portative organ, recorder, dulcimer, viol and percussion.
Music by such hit composers of the 16th century as King Henry VIII and Tilman Susato head the brass band’s repertoire. In contrast to the ‘authentic’ approach of “Musick’s Company,” they will offer spectacular new ‘takes’ on old favorites, from the Medieval carols like Gaudete and In dulci jubilo to elegant chorales arranged by J.S. Bach.
The mission of the Center for Old Music is to promote the preservation and live performance of music that pre-dates the Classical era. Its founding director is Donna Boyd, a recipient of the University of Kentucky’s College of Fine Arts Distinguished Alumni Award. Her fellow instrumentalists on this program will include Malissa Sullivan, Sharon Stewart, Dwight Newton and Steve Bennett.
