Great brass music always adds to the holiday season and this concert will be a great way to launch into the spirit of Christmas. The festive program will include concert overtures based on famous holiday tunes, effective carol settings, and well-known classical favorites, like the Farandole by George Bizet, based on the Provencal March of the Three Kings. Berlioz’s ‘Shepherd’s Chorus’ from The Childhood of Christ will also be on the program.

Among American composers featured will be Kentucky’s own James Curnow, in his Christmas Tryptych. Also, Stephen Bulla, principal arranger of the U.S. Marine Band, has provided spectacular holiday fare, including his Overture: The Proclamation of Christmas. The band’s Soprano Cornetist, Peter Pickett, will present an up-to-date version Adolphe Adam’s O Holy Night, as arranged by Bulla.

The Asbury College Collegium Strings will offer a sensitive work by the British composer, A Carol Fantasy, a work he first wrote for strings, and later adapted for brass band. Among the carols heard in this medley are Normandy Carol, The Holly and the Ivy, and The Coventry Carol. The strings, directed by Dr. Ronald Holz, will also perform several short works from George Frederick Handel’s operas and oratorios.

The program is designed to last one hour and should prove ideal for the widest audience range.
