Trombone
David Henderson is Principal Trombonist of the Lexington Brass Band and is a charter member. He is also Principal Trombonist of the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, and Principal Musician of Saxton’s Cornet Band, and holds music performance degrees from the University of Kentucky and the Eastman School of Music. As a freelance recording engineer, David has recorded albums for many groups in the area, including the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra (DOJO), the Advocate Brass Band, and the Great American Brass Band Festival.
David Ashley returns to the Lexington Brass Band after an eight-year hiatus spent traveling and performing around the world. He had previously been a member of the LBB from 1997-2000 while attending the University of Kentucky. His travels included two years as a member of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, with whom he recorded two albums and appeared as lead trombonist and soloist. This was followed by three years performing on Royal Caribbean and Carnival cruise ships. He recently completed sixteen months with the Mel Brooks musical “The Producers” on tour and at Harrah’s Atlantic City. He has also toured with the hit musical “42nd Street.” David has also returned to the Dimartino-Osland Jazz Orchestra (DOJO) and is currently a member of Saxton’s Cornet Band.
William C. Kite, a native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, holds a BMME from the University of Kentucky and is currently pursuing a Masters degree from UK. Bill is currently the Associate Director of Bands at Beaumont Middle School, Band Director at Rosa Parks Elementary, and serves as the Kentucky Music Educators Association All-State Jazz Coordinator. He has performed with various professional and community ensembles around the state of Kentucky including the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra (DOJO), the Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra, Lexington Jazz Men of Note, Bluegrass Area Jazz Ambassadors, the People’s Choice Band, Lexington Community Orchestra, and the Capital City Community Band. He lives with wife April and son Will in Lexington, Kentucky. He and his wife are expecting their second child in April.
Blake Barber is a senior Music Education major at Asbury University where he is currently student teaching at Mercer County High School in Harrodsburg, KY. He has been actively involved in performing ensembles, both instrumental and vocal, throughout his college career including the Asbury University Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band, the Collegium Musicum Vocal Ensemble and the Salvation Army Student Fellowship brass band, which is also under the direction of Dr. Ron Holz. Blake, under the instruction of Brad Kerns, has soloed with the Asbury University Orchestra and SASF Brass Band and was the instrumental winner of the Asbury University Concerto Competition in 2005 and Penneston Honors Recital in 2006. Blake’s future plans include pursuing a Masters Degree in either music theory or trombone performance and pedagogy and eventually teaching band on the high school or middle school level.
Valerie L. Evans is a native of Orlando, FL. She moved here in 2000 to attend the University of Kentucky where she received her Bachelor’s of Music in Music Education degree (2005). She is currently working on her Master’s in Music Performance at UK with an emphasis in Conducting. Although Miss Evans’s initial instrument was piano, her primary is trombone, which she has been playing since age 11. At UK she has performed as the principal trombonist in all the major ensembles including Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble, and has also performed in the UK Trombone Choir. Miss Evans is an adjunct faculty member at Transylvania University where she teaches Trombone and the Transylvania Jazz Ensemble. Outside of UK and Transy, Miss Evans maintains a private studio of low brass students. She also teaches beginning/intermediate piano students at her family’s music business, Bluegrass Arts (located in Nicholasville, KY). Miss Evans performs as a local freelance musician. She has performed with various ensembles around the area including the BlueBrass Quintet, The Bluegrass Area Jazz Ambassadors, Asbury University Ensembles, the Lexington Philharmonic (as a sub for their pops series), and other local jazz ensembles and rock bands.
Bass Trombone
Louis G. Bourgois III is a founding member of the Lexington Brass Band and has served as its Bass Trombonist since 1993; Principal Solo Euphonium, 1992-93; and on its Board of Directors since 1992. He is a professor of music at Kentucky State University, having joined its faculty in 1986, and teaches low brasses, music history and literature, and music education technology. He also serves as the Music Area Coordinator in the KSU Division of Fine Arts. He received his B.M.Ed. from Murray State University (1978), M.M. from the University of Louisville (1980), and D.M.A. in trombone performance and pedagogy from The Ohio State University (1986). In addition to performing with the Lexington Brass Band, he is also the bass trombonist of the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra and Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra. Outside of music he is an FCC-licensed amateur radio operator (KA4WFI) serving as a volunteer emergency communicator and National Weather Service-trained severe weather spotter; has been a licensed private pilot since 1981; and is nearing completion of his experimental/amateur-built Piper PA-11 Cub Special replica in his hangar at the Danville-Boyle County Airport, a project begun in 1998.
